What recent book or film have you been affected by?

Posted on Jun 12th, 2008 by Jim
This is in Response to the Questions and Reflections for June 12, 2008:

I have just read The Fountainhead, by Ayn Rand. It advocates some pretty radical ideas, very libertarian, I think. I don't agree with all the ideas in the book, but I do agree with Ms. Rand in that one's opinions and beliefs must come from oneself and be the results of reason. Though I have usually not taken everything for granted and have always tried to confirm things for myself, this book took that to a new level. It taught me that even the most fundamentals can be wrong, and it gave a higher capability to doubt, which should be very valuable in my quest to help the earth.

What I love

Posted on Jun 12th, 2008 by Jim

I love the beauty of nature. I want to live by the mountains, so that I can witness the grandeur of these giant fortresses that have withstood the test of time. I want climb their snow-covered slopes to the summit and watch the sun rise over the horizon and illuminate the earth. I want to live by a forest teeming with life: birds, squirrels, deer, beavers, even bears(though I wouldn't want to cross their paths). I want there to be a lake in the forest, a lake fed by the purest springs from the mountains. I want to plunge into the crystal mirror, then allow the sunlight seeping through the trees to dry me while I listen to the melodious tones of nature.

It is with this utopia in mind that I will donate time and money to preserve nature. I will do whatever I can, whether it is financially supporting a green group, or writing to my representatives in Congress, or participating in a demonstration, to ensure that natural refugees are unharmed and can be enjoyed by humans and wildlife alike.
I also love finding out things. That complements my love of nature. I will explore the frontiers of science in attempt to discover and improve sources of alternative energy, reduce waste, and eliminate pollution. I want to use my gifts to better the plight of the environment and its inhabitants.

Ideal Job Description

Posted on Jun 12th, 2008 by Jim
Each morning, I will walk to one of the four research centers near my house and work, or rather, live my life. It could be working with a team of nuclear physicists, smashing atoms into each other, discovering new quarks and moving closer to understanding the fundamental forces that hold the universe together. It could be working with a team of engineers, designing fusion reactors that would provide cheap electricity and replace the coal plants churning sooty smoke into the air we breathe, all without the risks of radioactive waste. It could working with a team of astrophysicists, crafting a mission to the sun. It could working alone, in an observatory, seeing the universe, its stars, its nebulas, its supernovas, its galaxies, its black holes, through the lens of the world's most powerful telescope. The, at an arbitrary time during the night, I will return to bed.
Or sometimes, If I am frustrated and stuck in the middle of a project, I will stay in my studio overlooking the mountains, painting, refreshing my mind for a different approach. Or even maybe, if I am exhausted from spending the previous night finishing a project, I will rest, and allow my dreams to carry me to those answers I desire of finding.

This is in Response to the Questions and Reflections for June 27, 2008:

Harmony.  People living peacefully with each other, with nature, with animals. Each taking only what it needs. No wars. No greed. No jealousy.
